VPC Peering In AWS

In this article, we will discuss VPC peering in AWS.

Purpose

VPC peering allows 2 EC2 in different VPCs to communicate with each other.

Steps

For setting up VPC peering, we will work on the following steps: -

Create a peering connection
Accept the peering request
Adding an entry in the route tables
Launch 2 EC2 instances
Enable inbound and outbound rules in the firewall
Ping EC2

Let us get started.

Create A Peering Connection

First, create 2 VPCs.

To create the VPC peering, click on Peering Connections on the left-hand side menu.

A screen appears on the right-hand side to create the connection.

Click on the Create peering connection button. A screen will appear where you can specify the source and destination VPC.

Click on the Create peering connection at the bottom.

Accept The Peering Request

Once the peering connection is established, the status of the request is Pending acceptance. To accept the request, select the request and click on Action → Accept request.

A popup window will appear to accept the request.

Click on the Accept request button to accept the request.

Adding An Entry In The Route Tables

Add an entry of the first VPC in the route table of the second VPC.

Here, Target is the name of the peering connection.

Launch 2 EC2 Instances

Launch 2 EC2 instances (one in each VPC).

Enable Inbound And Outbound Rules In The Firewall

Follow this link to: -

Enable inbound rules in the security group
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4) in the firewall

This should be done for both EC2 instances.

Ping EC2

Open the command prompt in the EC2 instance and ping the second EC2 instance using private IP.

The connection is established.
