Create The Autoscaling Group In AWS

In this article, we will create an autoscaling group in AWS.

Purpose

The autoscaling group increases or decreases the EC2 instance based on the increased or decreased load.

Auto Scaling Group Life Cycle

During Scaling Out, the life cycle of the autoscaling group is: -

Steps Of Creating The Autoscaling Group

We will work on the following steps for creating the autoscaling group: -

Launch an EC2 instance
Create the AMI
Create the launch configuration
Create the autoscaling group
Checking the auto scaling group

Let us work on each step.

Launch An EC2 Instance

First, launch an EC2 instance. You can follow this link to launch an EC2 instance.

Create The AMI

Second step is to create an AMI. You can follow this link to create an AMI.

Create The Launch Configuration

To create a launch configuration, click on the Launch Configurations menu.

A screen appears with the list of launch configurations. Click on the Create launch configuration button.

The create launch configuration screen will appear. Enter the Name and select the AMI.

Scroll down to select the instance.

Please note that the instance type should be either the same as that of AMI or with the same architecture.

Scroll down to select the key pair and click on the Create launch configuration button.

The launch configuration is created.

Create The Autoscaling Group

To create the autoscaling group, select the launch configuration and click on the Actions → Create Auto Scaling group.

In the first step, enter the Auto Scaling group name and Launch configuration.

Click on the Next button. In the next screen, select the VPC and the Subnets.

Click on the Next button. In the next screen, select the advanced configuration options. For this article, I am not doing any change.

Click on the Next button. In the next screen, you can specify the Group size.

Click on the Next button. In the next screen, you can add a notification or you can skip this step.

Click on the Next button. The review screen will appear. Review the information and click on the Create Auto scaling group button.

Checking The Auto Scaling Group

Once the auto scaling group is created, you can see the status as Updating Capacity

Once the capacity is updated, you can see 2 EC2 instances created.

Can We Have EC2 In Autoscaling Group From The Different Availability Zones?

Yes.

Can We Have EC2 In Autoscaling Group From The Different Regions?

No.

Launch Template Or Launch Configuration

Launch configuration is the old feature whereas the launch template is the new one. The launch template provides way more features than the launch configuration: -

The launch template is editable
Launch template provides versioning
Launch template supports multiple instance types
Launch template also supports on-demand as we as spot instance
Launch template supports placement groups
Launch template support dedicated host
Launch template supports EBS volume tagging
Launch template supports elastic interface
