Run The Premerge Build In Azure Devops

In this article, we will run the premerge build in Azure DevOps.

Scenario

Consider a scenario where you have 2 branches i.e. master and dev. Our requirement is to trigger a build before the code is merged from master to dev branch.

We will work on the following steps as part of the implementation.

Add a reviewer for the dev branch.
Add build validation on the dev branch.
Create a pull request from the dev branch.
Approve the pull request.

Add A Reviewer For The Dev Branch

First add the reviewer in the dev branch. You can use this link to add the reviewer.

Add Build Validation On The Dev Branch

To apply build validation, go to "Project Settings" → "Repositories". Click on the repository on the right-hand side.

A screen appears where we have three tabs i.e. "Settings", "Policies" and "Security". Click on the "Policies" tab.

Scroll down to the bottom and select the "dev" branch.

Once the "dev" branch is selected, click on the "+" button of the build validation section.

A window appears on the right-hand side. Enter the build policy and click on the "Save" button.

Create A Pull Request From The Dev Branch

Go to the "master" branch and commit some changes. Once changes are committed, create a new pull request.

A window appears to enter the details.

Approve The Pull Request

Now, approve the pull request.

Once the request is approved, the build gets triggered.
