Resize The Volume In AWS

In this article, we will resize the volume in AWS.

Prerequisite

First, launch an EC2 instance. You can use this link to launch an EC2 instance.

There are 2 methods of resizing volume: -

Let us discuss each method.

To resize the volume, select the volume and click on Actions → Modify Volume.

A screen appears where you can set the size of the volume. Click on the Modify button to complete the volume resize.

To resize the volume traditionally, we will follow these steps: -

Let us work on each step.

To create the snapshot of the volume, select the volume and click on Actions → Create Snapshot.

A screen appears where you can specify the snapshot Description.

Click on the Create Snapshot button to create the snapshot.

Once the snapshot is created, select the snapshot, and click on Actions → Create volume from snapshot.

A screen appears where we can specify the size of the volume.

As seen in the figure above, the volume size is changed from 30GB to 100GB.

The availability zone of volume and the EC2 instance should be the same.

To attach the new volume with the EC2 instance, select the volume and click on the Actions → Attach Volume.

A popup window appears to specify the instance. Click on the Attach button.

In the disk management utility, right-click on the new drive and click on the Online option.

From Disk 2, select the (Primary Partition) and click on the Action → Rescan Disks.

Again right-click on the (Primary Partition) section of Disk 2 and click on the Extend Volume... option.

A wizard will appear, you can refer to the screenshot below for completing the wizard.

Once you click on the Finish button, your new drive is created.

As the new drive contains all the files, you can detach and delete the old volume.
