Origin Failover In AWS Cloudfront

In this article, we will discuss origin failover in AWS CloudFront.

Purpose

The origin failover in AWS CloudFront ensures high availability. It means that if the primary origin is unavailable (or returns an HTTP response status that indicates failure) then the CloudFront switches to the secondary origin.

How To Create A Cloudfront With High Availability?

To create a CloudFront with high availability, we will work on the following steps: -

Create a CloudFront distribution
Add 2 origins in the CloudFront
Create an origin group

Let us work on each step.

Create A Cloudfront Distribution

First, create a CloudFront distribution. Please follow this link for CloudFront distribution creation.

Add 2 Origins In The Cloudfront

Once the CloudFront distribution is created, add one more origin. Follow this link for creating a new origin.

Create An Origin Group

Once the origin is created, click on the Create origin group button for creating the new origin group.

In the create origin group screen, select Origins, and click on the Add button.

The Origins is added as the primary origin.

Similarly, add another origin.

The next step is to enter the Name and select the Failover criteria. Click on the Create origin group button to create the origin group.

The origin group is created.

How Will The Origin Group Work?

The switching between the primary and secondary origin is done automatically once the primary origin returns the error code selected as failover criteria in the previous section.
