Lifecycle Hooks In The AWS Autoscaling Group

In this article, we will discuss lifecycle hooks in the AWS autoscaling group.

Purpose

Whenever the scale-out or scale-in activity happens, the life-cycle hooks allow you to pause the scale-out or scale-in activity and perform custom actions.

During the scale-out activity, the instances are put in wait state until you continue or the time-out period ends.

In the similar manner, the instances are put in wait state for scale-in activity as well.

How To Create Lifecycle Hooks?

First, create the autoscaling group. Once the autoscaling group is created, select the autoscaling group and go to the Instance management tab.

Click on the Create lifecycle hook button. A pop-up window will appear.

In the above picture: -

Field	Purpose
Lifecycle hook name	Name of the life cycle hook
Lifecycle transition	There are 2 values in the dropdown i.e., Instance launch and Instance terminate.In this field, we can specify whether lifecycle hooks will be triggered during the scale out or scale in activity
Heartbeat timeout	This is the timeout value in seconds. This field specifies the time when instance remain in wait state
Default result	This field specifies the default action i.e., CONTINUE or ABANDON if any failure occurs or timeout occurs.

Click on the Create button to create the lifecycle hooks.
