Export The SQL Server Database To The Azure Storage Account As A BACPAC File

In this article, we will export the SQL server database to the Azure storage account as a BACPAC file.

What Does BACPAC Stand For?

BACPAC stands for Binary Archive Package for SQL Azure. It is a file format used to package and export a SQL Server database in a single self-contained file.

Creation Of A BLOB Storage

Create a BLOB storage in Azure.

Export Database

To export the database, right-click on the database and go to Tasks → Export Data-tier Application…

The first screen of the wizard will appear.

Click on the Next > button. In the next window, you have an option to save the database as a BACPAC file.

Select the option Save to Microsoft Azure. Click on the Connect… button. A popup window will appear to select the storage account and the blob container.

Click on the Sign In… button. A screen will appear to authenticate the credentials. Once the credentials are authenticated, you can select the storage account and the blob container.

Click on the OK button. The storage account and the blob container are populated in the Export settings screen.

Click on the Next > button. The Summary screen of the wizard will appear.

Click on the Finish button. The operation will start.

Once the operation is completed, the databased is exported to the blob container.
