Dynamic Groups In Microsoft Azure Active Directory

In this article, we will discuss dynamic groups in Microsoft Azure Active Directory.

Purpose

Dynamic groups create a rule(s) for the members. If any user/device satisfies the rule then the user/device is added to the group.

Steps Of Creating The Dynamic Group

Here, we will work on the following steps: -

Activate the Azure Ad Premium P2 license
Create a dynamic group
Create a new user

Let us work on each step.

Activate The Azure Ad Premium P2 License

To activate the license, click on the "Licenses" link in the Azure AD.

On the licenses page, click on the "Get a free trial" link.

From the "Azure AD Premium P2" section, click on the "Activate" button.

The license got activated.

Create A Dynamic Group

In the Azure AD, click on the "Groups" link.

Create a new group. You can use this link to create the group. While creating the group, select the "Membership type" as "Dynamic User".

Scroll down and click on the link "Add a dynamic query".

A screen will appear to create the rule.

Here the rule is - The city of the user should be "gurugram". To save the rule, click on the "Save" button.

Finally, click on the "Create" button to create the group.

Create A New User

Create a new user. Use this link to create a user. Once the user is created, edit the user, and change the city to "gurugram".

Once the user is created, you can wait for 1-2 minutes. The user will be added to the group.
