What Is Data Archiving?

Data archiving is the process of collecting old data and moving it to a protected location. So that the data can be retrieved at a later point in time.

One example could be the finance-related documents of the previous financial year which may be required at a later point in time.

First Byte Availability

First Byte Availability is the amount of time required to retrieve data.

Different Data Archive Storage Classes

There are 3 categories of storage classes that S3 provides.

Storage Type	The scenario of using this type	Retrieval Time	Retrieval Cost
S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval	Stores data which is required once a quarter	Requires milliseconds of retrieval	Slightly higher per GB retrieval fee
S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval	Stores data which is required 1-2 times a year	Retrieval is done asynchronously and may require minutes to hours	Free bulk retrievals
S3 Glacier Deep Archive	Stores data which is required once a year	Retrieval is done within 12 hours	Free bulk retrievals
