Create A New Volume And Attach It With EC2

In this article, we will create a new volume and attach it to an EC2 instance.

Prerequisite

Before we create the volume, we will launch an EC2 instance.

Creating A New Volume

To create a new volume, click on the Volumes link.

A screen appears that displays the list of volumes. Click on the Create Volume button.

A screen will appear to enter the volume details.

Please note that the availability zone of the volume should be the same as the EC2 instance

Click on the Create Volume button to complete the creation.

Attaching The Volume With The EC2 Instance

Once the volume is created, select the volume, and click on Actions → Attach Volume.

A popup window appears to select the EC2 instance.

Click on the Attach volume button.

Formatting And Mounting The Volume

This is the last step. In this step, we will log in to the Windows EC2 instance using RDP. You can only see one default drive.

Now, open the notepad and write the following script

select disk 1 
attributes disk clear readonly 
online disk 
convert mbr 
create partition primary 
format quick fs=ntfs label="vol-0402c5befa60790ea" 
assign letter="D"

Save it to a specific location. For this article, I am storing it in a C drive with the name diskpart.txt. Open the command prompt and go to the C drive.

Execute the below command using the command prompt.

diskpart /s diskpart.txt

Your drive is formatted and mounted. Now, you can see the volume added newly.

This Disk Is Already Online

While executing the diskpart script, you may come across this error. To fix this issue, open the hard disk partition utility.

Right-click on the drive and click on the Offline option.
