Azure Backup Service

In this article, we will discuss the Azure backup service. Before we start the discussion, let me explain some of the basic concepts.

How Many Types Of Azure Backup Services?

Azure backup service is broadly classified as: -

Virtual machine backup
Disk backup
File backup

What Is The Resource Services Vault?

The resource services vault is the location where backups are stored.

Region Of Virtual Machine And Resource Services Vault

The virtual machine and resource services vault should be in the same region.

What Is The Backup Policy?

In the backup policy, you specify: -

Frequency of backup
Retention period of backup

What Is The Recovery Point?

A recovery point is a backup at a particular period.

What Is The Backup Snapshot?

Once the backup is completed, it is stored in a local virtual machine as a snapshot. Post that, the backup is copied from the local virtual machine to the resource services vault.

Create A Virtual Machine With Backup

First, create a virtual machine. While creating the virtual machine, the Management tab gives you the option to enable the backup. Check the checkbox Enable backup. Once you click on the checkbox, 2 other fields are visible.

Recovery Services vault - You can either use the existing recovery services vault or create a new one by clicking on the Create new link
Backup policy - Like Recovery Services vault, you can either use the existing backup policy or create a new one

While creating the backup policy, you can specify the frequency and retention period.

Complete the rest of the steps and complete the creation process. Once the virtual machine is completed, you can go to the Backup submenu to see the backup configuration.
