AWS Schema Conversion Tool

In this article, we will discuss the AWS schema conversion tool.

Purpose

AWS schema conversion tool (SCT) is used to migrate the schema from the source database to the target database. Please note that the data is not migrated using the AWS schema conversion tool.

Schema Conversion

In this article, we will migrate an on-premises MSSQL database to RDS. For that, we will work on the following steps: -

Download the required components
Specify MSSQL drivers in AWS SCT settings
Create an MSSQL database in AWS RDS
Create a project inside AWS SCT
Connect to the source and target database
Migrate database schema

So, let us get started.

Download The Required Components

First, we will download the AWS schema conversion tool and MSSQL JDBC drivers. Once the AWS schema conversion tool is downloaded, install the tool on your machine.

Specify MSSQL Drivers In AWS SCT Settings

The second step is to specify the MSSQL JDBC drivers. For that: -

Open AWS Schema Conversion Tool
Go to Settings → Global settings

Inside the Drivers tab, you can specify the path of JDBC drivers downloaded in the previous section

Click on the Ok button

Create An MSSQL Database In AWS RDS

Create an MSSQL database in AWS RDS. You can follow this link to create a database.

Create A Project Inside AWS SCT

First, open AWS SCT. For creating the new project, click on File → New project….

A popup window will appear where you can specify the Project name and Location. Click on the OK button to create the project.

The project is created.

Connect To The Source And Target Database

Once the project is created, connect to the source and the target database. For that, you have an option Add source and Add target in the AWS SCT.

First, click on the Add source button. A popup window will appear where you can specify the source database category.

For this article, we are selecting Microsoft SQL Server. Click on the Next button. In the next window, you can specify the credentials. Click on the Connect button.

The metadata loading will start.

In the similar manner, click on the Add target to add the target database credentials. For target, we will select the database category as Amazon RDS for Microsoft SQL Server.

Once you click on the Next button. Like source, fill the credentials and then metadata will load.

Please note → The source and database name should be the same.

Migrate Database Schema

First, go to the Main view → Main view.

In the source server, right-click on the schema and click on the Create mapping….

The following window will appear. Click on the Create mapping button.

The mapping is created.

Go to the main view again. In the source database, right-click on the schema and click on the Convert Schema option.

Following message will appear.

Click on Yes. On the target database, right-click and click on Apply to database

A confirmation message will appear. Click on Yes.

The database schema will be migrated.
