Add A New User Using The AWS Console

In this article, we will add a new user using the AWS console.

Types Of Users In AWS

AWS supports the following types of users: -

Root user
1. Root is the user of the highest priority
2. There is only one root user per account
Admin user → This user type has all the privileges as the root user except the following differences: -
1. Admin users cannot change their credit card details
2. Admin users cannot delete an account
Power User → This user type has all the privileges as Admin except the power user cannot access IAM. In other words, the Power User cannot create a user or a group, or a policy
End User → This user contains limited rights. This user can access only those resources which are assigned to him by an Admin user

How To Add A User?

To add a user, log in to the AWS console. In the search box, search the word IAM. Click on the IAM service from the search result.

On the IAM screen, click on the Users link on the left-hand side menu.

The following screen will appear.

Click on the Add users button.

In the Add user screen, enter the User name and Access type. In the Access type, there are 2 options: -

Programmatic access
AWS Management Console access

When the user selects the Programmatic access, the access key and secret key will be generated. Please note that you can use these keys at the time of configuring the CLI.

Click on the Next: Permissions button.

Select the permission(s) and click on the Next: Tags button.

This screen is for adding tags. As this step is optional, you can skip this step. Click on the Next button.

Finally, a review screen will appear where you can review the information filled on the earlier screens. Click on the Create user button to create a new user.

As you can see in the picture above, the access and secret keys are generated. You also have a CSV file to download.

The CSV file contains information about the user including the access and secret key. Please note that this screen is available only once.

Login As An IAM User

If you check the previous image, you can see the URL that you can use to sign in as an IAM user. Here, the number after https:// is the 12-digit Account ID.

You require this number at the time of login.
