Working On Form Properties Using Property Window

In this article I will explain how to set form properties using property window.

Software Requirement

Before you start reading this tutorial you should make sure that visual studio(any version) is installed on your machine.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Before you go ahead, it is required that you should have basic understanding of windows programming using Visual Studio.

What Are Properties?

Properties or attribute are the characteristics of an object. For example form, button, textbox etc are objects and colors, size etc are attributes.

How To Open Property Window?

Properties window comes on the right hand side in Visual Studio IDE, but if you have closed it then to open it using the steps given below

Click on the View menu option. A drop down opens.
Click on Properties Window option.

Or the alternative is you click client on the Property Window icon on the upper right hand side of Visual Studio (Please see the screen shot below).

Form’S Name Property

Name in real life is for uniquely identifying a person. In the similar way name attribute uniquely identifies a form.

To get the property details of form in property window click(single click) on the form to select it. To set the name property open the Property Window and click on the Name property.

Form’s name is the name of class in the code behind. If you are on designer screen and you press F7 key from the keyboard then code behind screens opens up.

See the figures above and you can easily check that the class name is same as Form’s name.

Now go to property window in designer’s screen and change the form’s name. Once you have changed the form’s name go to code behind by pressing F7 from the keyboard again. You will find the changed class name.

Form’S Text Property

Text sets the title of the form.

Now let’s change the Text property and run the program.

Form’S Size Property

Size property gets and sets the length and width of the form. In the property window the size property is set as two comma separated values. The first one denotes width and the second one denotes height.

Now change the size from 275,300 to 400,600 and run the program.

Conclusion

Property window facilitates the developer to set the properties of selected object. In this tutorial I have explained it using form object. In the similar way we can set the property of different objects like button, textbox and so on.
