Wildcards In Selectors In Uipath

In this article, we will use wildcards in selectors in UiPath.

Scenario

Let us consider a scenario where you write text in the notepad. For that, you perform these actions: -

Drag and drop the "Type Into" activity
Identify the notepad using the "Indicate on screen"

Now, check the selector of this activity.

In the above figure, we are specifying the title of the notepad as "Untitled - Notepad". So, the UiPath will write the text in the notepad with the title equal to "Untitled - Notepad".

Now save the notepad file and name it "Gyansangrah.txt". So, the title of the notepad is changed to "Gyansangrah.txt - Notepad".

In this case, the automation will fail as the bot will not find any notepad window with the title "Untitled - Notepad".

Wildcard Comes As A Savior

To handle the above failure, we use the wildcard. So, the selector is changed to.

Here, "*" is the wildcard that specifies that before the word "- Notepad", one or more than one character will come.

Types Of Wildcards In Uipath

There are 2 types of wildcards supported by UiPath: -

* → Substitute one or more than one character
? → Substitute only one character
