Type Of Screens In Lightswitch 2011

In this tutorial I will explain about different type of screens in lightswitch 2011.

Software Requirement

Before you start reading this tutorial you should make sure that

Visual studio 2010 is installed on your machine.
Visual Studio 2010 service pack 1 is installed on your machine.
Microsoft Visual Studio Light switch 2011 is installed on your machine.
Silverlight runtime version 4 or 5 is installed on your machine

Before you go ahead, it is required that you should know

What is the purpose of lightswitch technology?

Types Of Screens

Lightswitch 2011 supports 5 types of predefined screen templates

Details screen
Editable grid screen
List and details screen
New data screen
Search data screen

Details Screen

The details screen allows editing a single record from the table. This screen will not appear in lightswitch menu. You can see the screen shot of details screen in Search data screen section.

Editable Grid Screen

Editable screen are useful when you want to add, delete and modify multiple records at the same time. See the screen shot below

List And Details Screen

List and details screen is useful when you want to see the list of all records and edit their details in one screen. This screen has 2 areas. Left hand side shows the list of records and right hand side displays the details of selected item. See the screen shot below

New Data Screen

New data screen is useful when you want to insert one row at a time in the table. See the screen shot below

Search Data Screen

Search data screen is useful when you want to allow user to search records without giving data manipulation functionality. The summary column of the table is a hyperlink on click of which detail screen will open. You will come to know more about summary column in subsequent tutorials
