Step Functions In AWS

In this article, we will discuss step functions in AWS.

Purpose

Step function uses a finite state machine model to design and execute workflows.

Steps

For creating the step function, we will work on the following steps: -

Create a lambda function
Create a step function
Execute a step function
Output

Let us get started.

Create A Lambda Function

First, create a lambda function. Follow this link to create a lambda function.

Create A Step Function

For creating the step function, search the word step in the search box. Click on the Step Functions service from the search result.

The step function page will appear. Click on the State machines link on the left-hand side of the screen.

The screen will appear that contains the list of state machines. Click on the Create state machine button.

In the first step of the create state machine wizard, specify the authoring method. For this article, I am choosing Design your workflow visually.

Click on the Next button.

In the next screen, you can design the workflow. For this article, I am dragging and dropping the lambda function.

Click on the Next button.

In the next screen, you can see the generated JSON code and the visual flow of the step function. Click on the Next button without changing anything.

In the last step, you can specify the State machine name and the Execution role. For the Execution role, I am selecting the option Create new role.

Scroll down to the bottom and click on the Create state machine button.

The state machine gets created.

Execute A Step Function

For executing the step function, go to the function details and click on the Start execution button.

A screen appears where you can specify the input parameters. As we don’t have the input parameters, we can click on the Start execution button.

The execution will start. The bluish color indicates that execution is in progress.

Once the execution is completed, the color is changed to green.

Output

Once the execution is completed, you will receive an email.
