In this article, we will discuss the SqlDataSourceMode Enum in SqlDataSource.

Sqldatasourcemode Enum

The SqlDataSourceMode enum is used in the SqlDataSource to specify the data retrieval mode. There are 2 values of the SqlDataSourceMode enum: -

DataReader
DataSet

Datareader Mode

The data is retrieved using the IDataReader object in this mode. The IDataReader mode is a read-only, forward-only cursor. You cannot implement sorting, paging, etc. using the DataReader mode.

Dataset Mode

In this mode, the data is loaded to the DataSet-like structure. You can implement sorting, paging, etc. using the DataSet mode.

Example

Consider the following example: -

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
        ConnectionString="[your_connection_string]" 
	      DataSourceMode="DataReader"
        SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Subjects]">
</asp:SqlDataSource>
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" AllowSorting="true">
</asp:GridView>

When you try to sort the records, you will get the following error.
