Set The Expiry Time Of The S3 Object Stored In The Cache

In this article, we will set the expiry time of the s3 object stored in the cache.

Assumption

For this article, let us assume that the S3 bucket is using CloudFront for caching the file at the edge location. So, the term origin refers to the S3 bucket.

Purpose

The expiry time specifies how long the file will remain in the cache before the request is sent to the origin for the latest version of the file.

Now, consider a scenario where the file is static and is rarely changed. It is advisable to increase the expiry time so that load on the origin decreases.

How To Set The Expiry Time Of The Object?

First, create an s3 bucket and add a file to the bucket.

To specify the expiry time, select the object and click on Actions → Edit metadata.

In the Metadata section, click on the Add metadata button.

A row is added. Enter the following values: -

Metadata fields	Values
Type	System defined
Key	Cache-Control
Value	86400

The value will be specified in seconds. Click on the Save changes button to save the data. The expiry time is set on the S3 object.
