Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) In Microsoft Azure

In this article, we will discuss Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) in Microsoft Azure.

Purpose

SSPR allows the user to reset the forgotten password without calling the help desk.

Steps

In this article, we will work on the following steps: -

Enable SSPR from the Azure Portal
Setting up SSPR for the first time by the end-user
Resetting the password using SSPR

So, let us get started.

Enable SSPR From The Azure Portal

For enabling the SSPR, go to "Azure Active Directory" → "Password reset".

In the "Password reset" screen, go to the "Properties" link.

In this screen, you can specify whether you want to enable SSPR for everyone or the selected group. Enable SSPR and click on the "Save" button.

Next step is to specify the authentication methods. For that, click on the "Authentication methods" link.

In this screen, you can specify the number of methods required to reset the password. For this article, I am specifying mobile phone and email.

Click on the "Save" button and your SSPR is enabled now.

Setting Up SSPR For The First Time By The End-User

Once the SSPR is enabled, the end user needs to enable it. For that, he can login to the Azure portal. Once logged in, you will come up with the following screen.

Click on the "Next" button. In the next screen, you have to download any authenticator app on your mobile. For this article, I am downloading the "Microsoft authenticator" app on my mobile.

Click on the "Next" button. Following screen will appear.

Without changing anything, click on the "Next" button. In the next screen, you have to open the authenticator and scan the QR code.

After scanning the QR code, click on the "Next" button. Once you click on the "Next" button, you will get a notification on the mobile for approval. Click on the "yes" button. Your notification is approved.

Click on the "Next" button. In the next screen, you have to enter your mobile number and click on the "Next" button.

You will get a 6-digit code on your mobile as SMS. Enter the code and click on the "Next" screen.

If your code is verified then you will get the following screen.

Click on the "Next" button. In the next screen, you have to enter the email address and click on the "Next" button.

You will again get a 6-digit code on your mail. Once you enter the code, click on the "Next" button.

All your methods are approved. Click on the "Done" button to complete the setup.

Resetting The Password Using SSPR

Last step is to reset the password using the SSPR. At the time of login, you will get a link "Can’t access your account". Click on the link.

A screen will appear to select the type of account. Click on the "Work or school account" option.

In the next screen, enter the username (or the email id) and the captcha. Click on the "Next" button to continue.

In the next screen, you will get the following screen.

Click on the "Email" button. In the next screen, you can specify the email address associated with the account. Click on the "Next" button to continue.

In the next step, you have to select the mobile number for sending the text message. Click on the "Next" button.

In the next screen, enter the mobile number and click on the "Text" button.

You will receive a SMS. Enter the 6-digit code in the next screen and click on the "Next" button.

A screen will appear to enter the new password. Enter the new and confirm password and finally click on the "Finish" button.

Your password is reset now. You can now login using the changed password.
