Route Table In AWS

In this article, we will discuss the route table in AWS.

Purpose

The route table contains the set of rules (called routes). These rules specify where the traffic from the subnet should be redirected.

Main Route Table

Whenever a VPC is created, a default route table is created which is called the Main route table. This route table controls the traffic of those subnets that are not associated with any route table.

Subnet And Route Table Mapping

Each subnet is associated with only one route table whereas one route table can have the entries of one or more subnets.

Routes In Route Table

Each route contains the following information: -

Destination
Target

Consider a scenario where you want to enable the subnet to access the internet. You will use the following destination and target.

Destination	Target
0.0.0.0/0	Internet gateway in VPC

How To Create A Route Table?

In the Route tables screen, click on the Create route table button.

A screen will appear where you can enter the Name, select VPC and click on the Create route table button.

The route table is created.

How To Associate A Subnet With The Route Table?

To associate a subnet with the route table, select the route table and click on the Subnet associations tab.

On the Subnet associations tab, click on the Edit subnet associations button (see the image above).

A screen will appear where you can select the subnet(s) and click on the Save associations button.
