Recycle Bin Service For EBS Snapshots

In this article, we will discuss the recycle bin service for EBS snapshot in AWS.

Purpose

Recycle bin provides you an option to retain the deleted snapshots (just like recycle bin in the Windows operating system) so that they can be recovered after accidental deletion.

In the recycle bin service, we create the retention rules where we specify the number of days, the deleted snapshots are stored and can be recovered.

How To Create A Retention Rule In Recycle Bin?

The first step is to search for the recycle bin service in the AWS portal.

In the recycle bin service screen, click on the Create retention rule button.

The Create retention rule screen will appear. On the screen, enter the retention rule name.

Scroll down the Retention settings section.

In this section, fill in the following details: -

Resource type (EBS Snapshots in this case)
Resource tag
Retention period

Scroll to the bottom and click on the Create retention rule button.

The retention rule is created.

Delete The EBS Snapshot

Before you delete the snapshot, make sure that the EBS volume is tagged with the same key-value pair as mentioned in the retention rule.

Deleted EBS Volume Snapshot In The Recycle Bin

Go to the recycle bin service and check the Resources section. You can see the deleted snapshot.
