Perform Disaster Recovery In Case Of Virtual Machine Failover In Azure

In this article, we will see how to perform disaster recovery in case of virtual machine failover in Azure.

Implementation Steps

For implementation, we will perform the following actions: -

Create the replication of a virtual machine
Invoke a failover
Clean the failover

Let us discuss each step.

Create The Replication Of A Virtual Machine

For creating the replication, the first thing is to create a virtual machine with the backup enabled. In the details section, go to the Disaster Recovery tab where you can specify the target region.

In the Advanced settings, we can specify the Virtual network, VM resource group and other resources of the target region.

Click on the Review + Start replication.

Finally, click on the Start Replication button. The replication process will start and will take around 10-15 minutes to complete. Once the replication process is completed, you can see that new resource groups and recovery services vaults are created for the target region.

Again, go to the Disaster Recovery tab of the virtual machine. You can see that the field Status has 0% synchronized. You have to wait for another 10 mins to synchronize it completely.

Once the synchronization is completed, the status is changed to Protected.

Now you are ready to invoke a test failover.

Invoke A Failover

To Invoke a failover, click on the Failover or Test failover. When the failover is invoked, actually a virtual machine is created at the target location. Once you click on the button, another screen will appear.

Enter all the information and click on the Ok button. Once the failover process is completed (in approx. 10 mins), a new virtual machine is created at the target location.

Clean The Failover

The final step is to clean the failover. It means that you are done with your testing and the virtual machine created in the target region must be deleted. The cleaning step of failover is invoked by clicking the Cleanup test failover button.

Another screen will appear to enter the information. Once all the information is filled in, click on the Ok button.

Once the cleaning is completed, the virtual machine is deleted from the target region.
