Move A Resource From One Resource Group To Another In Azure

In this article, we will move a resource from one resource group to another in Azure.

Important Things To Notice For Movement Of Resources

During the movement, a write and delete lock should be applied to the resource
Even if the movement of the resource is completed, the location of the resource will not change

For this example, we will create 2 resource groups.

We will then create an IP address that will be moved from one resource group to another.

If you go to the details screen, you can see the "change" link beside the resource group.

Once you click on the "change" link, a screen appears to select the "Source" and "Target" resource groups.

Click on the "Next" button. Select the resource you want to move.

Click on the "Next" button. Finally, a review screen will appear.

Click on the "Move" button to start the movement. Once the movement is completed, you can see the changed resource group.

There are some exceptions. Some of them are listed here: -

A virtual machine with the certificate stored in the vault can be moved to the different resource groups in a subscription. But cannot move into different subscriptions
Virtual machines implemented with Azure backup cannot be moved
In the case of virtual networks, you must move all the resources inside the virtual network
If the virtual network is peered then peering must be removed
