Jump Server In Azure

In this article, we will create the jump server in Microsoft Azure.

Scenario

Consider a scenario, where you have a virtual machine and you want to perform the following actions on the virtual machine: -

Do not want to expose over the internet via the public IP address
Log in to the virtual machine using the RDP

Jump Server

To accomplish the above scenario, we use a jump server. A jump server is a concept where we add another virtual machine to the same virtual network. It could be in the same or different subnet.

The jump server virtual machine is exposed through the public IP address. To access the virtual machine (with no public IP address), we will work on these steps: -

Let me work on the implementation part.

Implementation

For implementation, we will work on the following steps: -

Create 2 virtual machines
Add a rule in the target virtual machine for 3389 port number

Let us work on each step.

Create 2 Virtual Machines

Here, we have created 2 virtual machines i.e., "jumpvm1" and "targetvm". The "jumpvm1" is associated with a public IP address and is in another subnet.

Whereas, the virtual machine "targetvm" is not associated with the public IP address.

Add A Rule In The Target Virtual Machine For 3389 Port Number

In the "targetvm", add the following inbound rule.

Here, we are only allowing the jump server to access the target machine using the RDP.

Connect The Target Virtual Machine

Now, let us try to connect the target virtual machine from your local system. You will get the following error.

But, if you access the target virtual machine from the jump server, you can access it.
