Introduction To Network Security Groups In Azure

In this article, we will provide an introduction to network security groups in Azure.

Purpose

The network security groups control the traffic on the virtual machine. The network security group can be associated with either of the following: -

Network Interface
Subnet

Rules In Network Security Group

There are two types of rules in the network security group: -

Inbound rules → Rules applied on the incoming traffic
Outbound rules → Rules applied on the outgoing traffic

Create A Virtual Machine

At the time of creating a virtual machine, you have an option for enabling the inbound rules in the Basics tab.

In the Networking tab, you can also specify the network security group and inbound rules as well.

Either the network security group is created by default or you can specify the new network security group by selecting the Advanced radio button.

Once the virtual machine is created, you can see both the tabs i.e. inbound and outbound rules.

Mapping NSG With Network Interfaces And Subnets

If you go to the network security group, you can see that network security groups are associated with the network interface by default.

You can also go to the Subnets submenu and associate the network security groups with subnets.
