Introduction To Firewalls In Azure

In this article, we will introduce firewalls in Azure.

Purpose

The firewall protects from external cyber-attacks.

Create A Virtual Machine

First, create a virtual machine. Please note that there should be no inbound rule for the virtual machine.

Secondly, the virtual machine should not be associated with the public IP address.

Add Subnet In The Virtual Network For The Firewall

The second step is to add a subnet "AzureFirewallSubnet" in the virtual network.

Add A New Firewall

To add a new firewall, click on the "Firewall" link in the virtual network.

A screen will appear on the right-hand side. Click on the "Click here to add a new firewall". The "Create Firewall" screen will appear. Enter the details and create the new firewall. Please note that the region of the virtual network and firewall should be the same.

Once the project details are entered, scroll down to select the "Firewall policy".

To add a new policy, click on the "Add new" link. A popup window will appear to enter the policy details.

Click on the "OK" button to close the window.

Create The Route Table

The next step is to create a new route table.

Once the route table is created, go to the "Routes" submenu to add a new route. Click on the "+ Add" button.

Enter the details and click on the "OK" button.

Once the routes are created, click on the subnets.

Click on the "Associate" button. A screen will appear as shown in the figure below. Use the same subnet that the virtual machine is using.

Click on the "OK" button to associate the subnet.
