Intent And Utterances In LUIS

In this article, we will discuss intents and utterances in LUIS.

What Are Intents And Utterances?

Consider a scenario, where 3 friends are talking to each other.

Let us name those friends as Tom, Christina and Bella. Here is the conversation.

Let us check the above conversation.

In this first message, Tom is greeting Bella.
In the second message, Bella responds by greeting Tom.
In the third and fourth message, he is asking about her health.
In the fifth message, Bella responds about her health.

In the above conversation, Tom has 2 intentions

Greet Bella
Asking for the well-being of Bella.

Let us assume that Tom is the user who is chatting to the chatbot and Bella is a chatbot. Then the intentions of the Tom (i.e. Greet and ask for well-being) is intent and the actual text spoken by Tom is utterances.

So, intent is

How To Create An Intent?

To create an intent

Click on the "Intents" option from the left-hand side menu. Click on the "Create" button.

A popup will appear where you can specify the intention name.

Enter the "Intent name" and click on the "Done" button.
Another window will appear where you can submit your utterances.

Test

For performing tests, you have to click the "Train" button and then the "Test" button.

Once you click on the "Test" button, a window will appear where you can test the intents and utterances.
