HTTP Methods In Web API

In this method, we see how to use various HTTP methods (or verbs) in web API.

HTTP Methods

When you are accessing a web application (using the web browser that acts as the client) hosted on a server, you are actually sending a request to the server. In reply, the server processes the request and sends the response.

Processing the request means doing one of the following operations on the resources – insert, update, delete or retrieval. There are 4 HTTP methods (or verbs) to accomplish that.

Get – retrieving
Post – Inserting
Put – Update
Delete - Deletion

Can We Override HTTP Methods?

This is the question came to my mind, when I was reading about it. I searched the answer to this question and found one line on the following link - https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec9.html

‘This method MAY be overridden by human intervention (or other means) on the origin server’.

This line is true for every method. If we write delete code in get, put or post then it will work fine.

How Web API Uses HTTP Methods?

In web API, a method is decorated with following attributes

HttpGet
HttpPost
HttpPut
HttpDelete

The attribute above the method specifies the intent of the method, but again it could be overridden using human intervention.
