In this article, we will discuss hierarchies in Amazon S3.

How Does S3 Maintain Hierarchy?

Unlike the file system in the operating system, the S3 has a flat structure and does not maintain a hierarchy. S3 maintains the hierarchy based on the naming convention of the S3 objects.

Naming Convention Of The S3 Object

There are 2 types of objects in the S3 bucket i.e., files and folders. Each S3 object consists of the following parts.

Prefix
Key name

Example

Consider the following hierarchy.

Here, gyansangrah-bucket is the S3 bucket name.
