Freezing Panes In Excel 2007

In the earlier article you have seen how to split the excel window into panes. Similar to that we have another feature in excel called ‘Freeze Panes’.

Before we see what does freezing panes means let us see what are the software requirements and prerequisite knowledge required for understanding this tutorial.

Software Requirement

Before you start reading this tutorial you should make sure that excel 2007 (or above) is installed on your machine.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Before you go ahead, it is required that you should know basics about excel. Apart from that understanding of split in excel will be an added advantage.

Freeze Panes

Like split Freeze Panes also divides the screen into multiple sections, but there is a difference, in split you can increase/decrease the size of panes while in freeze you cannot do that.

To freeze a row/column

Select any row/column
Go to ‘View’ option
Select ‘Freeze Panes’ drop down
Click on ‘Freeze Panes’

Once you have clicked on the option you could see partition of screen into panes

Unfreeze Panes

Once you have freezed panes there is always an option to unfreeze it. To do that

Go to ‘View’ option
Select ‘Freeze Panes’ drop down
Click on ‘Unfreeze Panes’

It is important to note that this option is available only when you have enabled ‘Freezed Panes’ in your excel file.

Freeze Top Row And First Column

In excel we have 2 shortcut buttons to freeze top row or first column. You can check that option in the figure above. Freeze top row option is to add freezed pane on first row as shown in figure below

Similarly Freeze first column option is to add freezed pane on first column as shown in figure below
