What Is An Edge Location?

An edge location is a location where content is cached (separate from AWS regions/AZs). Edge locations are not tied to Availability Zones or regions.

What Are Regional Edge Caches?

Regional Edge Caches are located between origin web servers and global edge locations and have a larger cache.

How Request Goes To Edge Location, Regional Edge Caches, And Origin Servers?

Edge Locations

CloudFront uses a network of edge locations around the world to cache copies of your content. When a viewer requests content that you are serving with CloudFront, the request is routed to the nearest edge location, which serves the content if it is already cached there.

Regional Edge Caches

If the content is not cached at the edge location nearest to the viewer, CloudFront forwards the request to a regional edge cache. These regional edge caches are in major metropolitan areas and serve as the next level of caching after the edge locations.

Origin Servers

If the content is not cached at the regional edge cache, CloudFront fetches the content from your origin server (such as an Amazon S3 bucket, an EC2 instance, or a custom origin) that you have configured for CloudFront.
