Custom Roles In Azure

In this article, we will discuss the custom roles in Azure.

Purpose

If your requirements are not satisfied with predefined roles, then you can create custom roles.

Create A Custom Role

In this article, we will create a custom role at the resource group level. For that, go to the resource group and click on the “Access control (IAM)” submenu.

A screen will appear on the right-hand side. Click on "+ Add" → "Add custom role".

A screen will appear to enter the custom role name. For this example, we have entered the name "virtualmachinereader". Click on the "Next" button.

In the next screen, you can add permissions for that role. Click on the "+ Add permissions" button.

In the Add permissions screen, search "Microsoft.compute". The cards matching the search criteria will appear. Click on the "Microsoft Compute" card.

A list of permissions will appear. You can select any permission. For this example, we have selected the "Read: Get Virtual Machine" permission. Click on the "Add" button to add permission to the custom role.

You can see the permission added to the custom role in the screenshot below. Click on the "Review + Create'' button for validation. Once the validation is done, click on the "Create" button to create the custom role.

How To Assign A Custom Role To The User?

To assign the custom role, click on the “+ Add” → “Add role assignment”.

A screen will appear on the right-hand side. In the "Role" dropdown, you can search custom role. You can then select the user and assign the role.
