Cross Region Replication For S3 Buckets In AWS

In this article, we will perform cross-region replication for S3 buckets in AWS.

Purpose

The purpose of the cross region replication is to copy the file(s) from the source bucket to the designation bucket asynchronously.

Prerequisite For CRR (Cross Region Replication)

Both source and the destination buckets should comply these 2 conditions: -

Both buckets should be public
Bucket versioning should be enabled for both the buckets

Creation Of Buckets

First, create the source bucket.

Scroll down and make the bucket public.

Scroll down further and enable bucket versioning.

Scroll to the bottom and click on the Create bucket button to complete the bucket creation. In the similar way, create the destination bucket.

Make the bucket public and enable bucket versioning as we did for the source bucket. Once you have created the destination bucket, both source and destination buckets are ready with you.

Add Replication Rule

To add a replication rule, click on the Management link inside the source bucket.

Scroll down to the Replication rules section.

Click on the Create replication rule button. A screen appears where you can enter the Replication rule name.

Scroll down to select the source bucket.

Further scroll down to select the destination bucket.

Scroll down to select the IAM role. Select the option Create new role.

The above section will create a new role in the IAM section.

Scroll to the bottom and click on the Save button to save the rule. A popup window will appear to confirm if you want to apply the rule on the existing buckets or not. Select the No, do not replicate existing objects option, and click on the Submit button.

CRR In Action

Upload a file in the source bucket.

After some time, the file gets copied to the destination bucket.
