A column store index stores data in a column-wise fashion as compared to the traditional row-wise fashion.

When Column Index Store Is Useful?

If you need to retrieve data based on a particular column or set of columns, this can be efficient. To get the column data in the row-based index, the database engine scans through all the rows to find the relevant data.

Types Of Column Index Stores

SQL Server supports both clustered and non-clustered column store indexes. Here is the syntax: -

-- Clustered store index
CREATE CLUSTERED COLUMNSTORE INDEX [idx_index_name]
ON [dbo].[table_name];

-- Non-Clustered store index
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [idx_index_name]
ON [dbo].[table_name] ([column_name]);
