Cloudformation Change Sets In AWS

In this article, we will discuss CloudFormation change sets in AWS.

Purpose

Whenever you want to perform any update in the stack and you want to know how the changes will impact the existing resources. You use change sets.

Change sets allow you to preview how the proposed changes will impact the existing resources without doing actual changes. Once you are satisfied, you can execute the change set.

On execution, the changes are implemented.

Steps

In this article, we will work on the following steps: -

Create a stack
Create a new template
Create a new changeset
Changeset details

Let us work on each step.

Create A Stack

First, create a stack. Use this link for stack creation.

Create A New Template

In the previous section, we created a stack for creating the S3 bucket. Now, we will replace the existing template with the new template.

In the new template, we will create a DynamoDB.

Create A New Changeset

For creating the new changeset, select the stack created in the previous section. Click on Actions → Create change set for current stack.

The change set creation screen will appear. In the first screen, select the new template.

Click on the Next button. In the next screen, you can specify the parameters. Click on the Next button without doing any changes.

In the next screen, you can configure different stack options. Click on the Next button without doing any changes.

In the last screen, you can review the data you have entered. Click on the Create change set button.

A pop-up window will appear to enter the Change set name. Enter the name and click on the Create change set.

The change set is created.

Changeset Details

You can go to the details and see the preview of changes.

Once you are satisfied with the changes, you can click on the Execute button. A popup window will appear to confirm the action in case of failure.

Click on the Execute change set button to commit your changes.
