Burn-Down Chart In Agile

In this article, we will discuss the burn-down chart in agile.

Purpose

The burn-down chart is the graphical representation which answers the following questions

How many story points are left?
How much time is remaining to complete the pending task?

In other words, a burn-down chart is a line chart between the work remaining against time.

Burn-Down Chart Explained

In the burn-down chart, we have the following parts

Total effort
Amount of effort remaining
Number of days in the sprint
Number of days remaining
Ideal trend
Current trend

In the burn-down chart, we have effort (i.e. story points) on the Y-axis and number of days on the X-axis.

Consider an example of the sprint that contains the 80 story points to be completed in 5 days. As per the ideal scenario, if we complete 16 story points in a day then 80 story points will be completed in 5 days.

	Day 1	Day 2	Day 3	Day 4	Day 5
Story points pending	80	64	48	32	16

The above table represents the ideal trend. But in actual scenario, the story points would be

	Day 1	Day 2	Day 3	Day 4	Day 5
Story points pending	80	60	40	25	16

If we plot the chart with the above 2 tables, then the chart would be
