Purpose

The AWS shared responsibility model is a framework that defines the division of security and compliance responsibilities between AWS and its customers.

AWS Shared Responsibility Model

AWS is responsible for the security of the cloud. This means that AWS takes care of securing the underlying infrastructure, physical data centers, networking components, and the foundational services provided. This includes tasks such as: -

Hardware and software infrastructure management
Data center physical security
Networking and firewall management
Patching and updating underlying infrastructure
Availability and reliability of services

Customers are responsible for the security in the cloud. This involves securing the data, applications, and services that are hosted on the AWS platform. Customers need to manage access controls, data encryption, application-level security, and other configurations. Responsibilities include: -

Data protection and encryption
Identity and access management (IAM)
Application security and patch management
Configuration management
Compliance with relevant regulations
