Availability Options In Azure

This article will discuss the Availability Options when creating a virtual machine in Microsoft Azure.

What Are The Availability Options?

Consider the following scenarios: -

Loss of data due to the system failure
System reboot

In both cases, the result would either be a data loss or an interruption in the operation. To save your organization from data loss or operation interruption, Availability Options comes into the picture.

There are 3 values of the Availability Options: -

No infrastructure redundancy is required
Availability zone
Availability set

Availability Zone

It means making your system highly available by deploying your virtual machine across multiple physical systems in different data centers.

In case of any failure, the other system will take over.

Availability Sets

Like the Availability Zone, the Availability Set also deploys your virtual machine across the different physical systems. But the difference is - in the case of the Availability Zone, the data centers are different whereas in the case of the Availability Set, the physical system is deployed on the same data center.

There are 2 parameters in the Availability Sets: -

Fault Domains - A Fault domain is a set of hardware components that share a single point of failure. More fault domains, the less the chance of failure
Update Domains - If the system is going for software/hardware update or reboot then the update domain (which is the group of virtual machines) will reboot in parts so that the whole system is not in the unavailable state

No Infrastructure Redundancy Required

This option is the riskiest option where Azure doesn't maintain the redundant infrastructure. So, in case of failure, the machine will not be available.
