Address Space In Azure Virtual Networks

In this article, we will discuss the address space in virtual networks.

Format Of An IP Address

An IP address consists of 4 decimal digits separated by a period (.).

Behind the scene, the decimal value is stored in the form of bits. So, the IP address is a 32-bit number separated by period (.). So, the 32-bit number of the above IP address is: -

Address Space Format

The format of an IP address is called CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing). For example, 10.0.0.0/24.

In the above address space, 24 is the network prefix length. What does the number 24 signify here?

It means that the first 24 bits of the IP address are reserved for the virtual network that will not change. The last bit is assigned to resources like virtual machines.

So, the range of address space is from 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.255.
