Adding Data Into The Table Using New Screen In Light Switch 2011

In the previous tutorial, I had created 2 tables Employee and Department. In this tutorial, I will add values in the Department table using the New Screen.

Implementation

You can add a screen by two ways. If you are working on the entity designer then you can click on the Screen button else you can right click on the Screen folder in the Solution Explorer and click on the Add Screen...

When you click on the New Screen.. button, a pop up window comes.

You can select the different types of screen depends upon the requirement. As the purpose of this tutorial is to add the data in a table. So, I am selecting the New Data Screen as the screen type. On the right-hand side, we have to select a table in which we want to do data manipulation.

For this example, we are selecting the table "Department". And also we can give the name to the screen. Here, we have given CreateNewScreen as the screen name, but you can change the name. Once you have done with all the required things, you can click on the "Ok" button.

Now run the program

Click on the Create New Screen button and the input screen will display (as shown in the figure above).

In the Department table, there are two fields, one is an ID which acts as a unique identifier and other is the DepartmentName that will be filled by the user. The textbox shown in the figure above is the field where you can enter the department name and save the information in the table. To save the information we have a Save button. There is another button with a caption Refresh. If have a list of records and you want to get the updated list from the table then you can use this button.

Now, click on the Save button without filling any information in the Department Name textbox. A validation error will come because while creating the Department table you have added a validation Required on the DepartmentName field of the table.

Now, enter the information in the textbox and click on the Save button. The information will be saved in the table.

There is an important thing to notice that once you save the information the record automatically comes into the edit mode so that you can change the information and save it again. If you don’t want to do anything with the record, you can close the tab by clicking on the cross(x) button.
