CloudFormation In AWS

In this article, we will discuss CloudFormation in AWS.

Purpose

Consider an example, where you have a requirement for creating the same infrastructure elements like S3 bucket, EC2, load balancer etc. for the client. You have 2 options to accomplish the task: -

Create the same infrastructure components manually everywhere
Use CloudFormation

The CloudFormation is a service that allows you to create/update/delete the AWS infrastructure using the template.

Different Components Of CloudFormation

Component	Description
Templates	The JSON or YAML text file that contains the instructions for building out the AWS resources
Stacks	The entire environment described by the template and created, updated, and deleted as a single unit
StackSets	AWS CloudFormation StackSets extends the functionality of stacks by enabling you to create, update, or delete stacks across multiple accounts and regions with a single operation
Change Sets	A summary of proposed changes to your stack that will allow you to see how those changes might impact your existing resources before implementing them

Steps

In this article, we will work on the following steps: -

Create and save the template
Create a stack with the template

So, let us get started.

Create And Save The Template

First, search the word cloudformation in the search box. Click on the CloudFormation services from the search result.

The CloudFormation screen will appear. Click on the Create stack button.

In the create stack screen, select the radio button Create template in Designer.

Click on the Create template in designer button. The designer screen will appear.

Drag and drop the resource. For this article, we are dragging and dropping the S3 bucket on the designer.

Once done, save the template

A popup window will appear to specify the location. For this article, we are saving the template file locally.

Create A Stack With The Template

Now again go back to the stack creation screen and this time, select the radio button Template is ready. Upload the template file and click on the Next button.

In the next screen, enter the Stack name and click on the Next button.

In the next screen, do not change anything and click on the Next button.

In the next screen, click on the Create stack button.

The resource creation will start.

Once the resource is created, you will see the success event.

The S3 bucket is created.
